BIKES & OTHER STUFF

Part 1 - Bikes

Section 1 - Bicycles

I had just never seen this before...disc brakes on a bicycle. Why?

Shows what I know about bikes. I'm told they're getting more common, and the main reasons are that they are less susceptible to getting crudded up (they aren't rolling through the mud), and they don't get deformed if the wheel does, so they can maintain better contact with the brake pad. Makes sense. (But they do add weight) This would also allow other types of rim to be used in the future, ones which don't provide a braking surface.

Interesting looking bicycle, besides.

GM Deathwatch continues! Chevrolet is having more success selling bicycles in Japan than cars. I'm serious.

Uh oh, Peugeot's in for it, too!

Section 2 - Motorcycles

Enfield Bullet Been making the same motorcycle for over 50 years. In India.

In my opinion, that is the most beautiful motorcycle engine ever. It's just pretty. Not as pretty as the Nissan L28 or Ford/Yamaha SHO, though.

I don't have a clue. I don't know bikes. I just took these pictures because I thought people might find some of them interesting.

Honda something

Honda Super Cub Deluxe

50cc scooter, been produced for ages. Mailmen ride these things, but they're red. Lots of them are set up for deliveries of various kinds, actually.

Honda Goldwing

Ask my dad about the Honda Goldwing.

Honda Gyro UP

If I recall correctly, it's Honda.

Piaggio scooter.

Sachs moped

I think this is really spiffy looking.

Tomos Revival Moped

This is even spiffier, though.

Motorcycles aren't spiffy, but mopeds and scooters are.

Wood Panelled Scooter

In case you want to know where you can get your very own wood panelled scooter, here is the address.

Yamaha Something

I have no idea, all I know is that it is weird looking.

Mixwell

Sounds like something a DJ would call themselves. DJ Mixwell.

Yamaha Something

Something

Looks...I dunno.

Part 2 - Other Stuff

Section 1 - Misc. Vehicles

I have no fucking clue.

Whatever it is (well, it's a scooter with a roof) it's made my Matsuda Research and Development.)

See that plate? They're street legal, folks!

These, however, are not.

Nor is the RAD MOBILE, I'm afraid.

I'd just never seen any Sumitomo heavy equipment

An authentic Mitsubishi Zero at the National Museum of Science in Tokyo. Not many remain. That tends to happen to your toys if you get defeated.

Section 2 - Traffic

Long exposures (mostly around 6 seconds) of traffic at night. Kind of like that scene in Akira!

Ikejiroohashi

Shibuya

Oodori Kouen in Sapporo

Section 3 - Trains

Just a few interesting trains I took pictures of in Japan.

Kintetsu line in Yokaichi

See how the ground is all reddish near the tracks? I'm pretty sure that's rust. This whole town is kind of rusty. It's not without it's charm, actually. I've never been someplace so...universally old. Also that's a narrow-guage railway. That train is about as wide as a bus.

My friend Erico at a stop on the same line, with a different engine at it.

700 series Shinkansen

This is the train I took from Nagoya to Tokyo. (24 meg AVI file) It's really goddamn fast.

Type D51 number 230

Not nearly as fast as the Shinkansen, I'm sure. Especially since it doesn't go anywhere anymore. According to it's little info plaque, it was retired in Hokkaido in 1977. They still do run a similar train to Niseko in Hokkaido today, though. It was built in Nagano in 1941. Yeah, 1941. It's not as old as it looks like it ought to be.

Section 4 - Weird, Unique, or Unidentified Cars

Mitsuoka Ryoga

This is supposed to be reminiscent of an old Daimler/Jaguar. Well, from this view it does a passable job. From the rear, not so much.

Mitsuoka is a company that, IIRC, specializes in making abominations like this out of Nissans. I wish I'd gotten a better shot of the side, so you could see how NOT right this looks. The newer ones look much better, though.

A minivan

Probably a kei car. Whose, I don't know.

Japanese lowrider.

I'm not sure what this is. Either a Toyota Crown or Nissan Maxima wagon, I THINK. Well, not a wagon, a hearse. Sort of.

What you are seeing in there is both stereo equipment and hydraulics.

What....the....fuck.

Whatever the hell this is

I don't know what this is. Is this a London cab?

I'm told by the SA Forums AI goons that yes, it is.

I'm sure I could figure this out, but I dont' care.

Toyota Crown Wagon

I think this is a Toyota Crown.

But I'm not sure, so I put it here.

Otomo-gou

This is at the National Museum of Science in Tokyo.

"Japan's First Mass Produced Automobile

Otomo-gou

1925; Length 3030mm (10 shaku) (9.94 feet); Width 1212mm (4 shaku) (3.97 feet); height 1636 (5.4 shaku) (5.37 feet); weight 450kg (992 pounds!!); Inline 4 cylinder OHV engine with hand cranked magnetic ignition; Displacement 943cc

The Otomo-gou was sold for 4 years, starting in 1924. 300 were made. This display car, the various parts, and the extra engine were restored by a joint project between this museum and the Toyota Museum."

A handful of others still exist, as well.

Section 5 - Akihabara

Akihabara is the electronics district in Tokyo. You can find the main stores of several large Japanese electonics retailers there, and dozens of smaller (but still multi-floor) stores. There are even still some of the electronics parts and used computer retailers the district became famous for.

But in the last decade or two it's been taken over by anime nerds. Thus we get the term "akibakei" (ah-kee-bah-keh-ee). That's from "Akiba", short for "Akihabara", and "kei" (keh-ee), style. Roughly the same meaning as "otaku."

This explaination was changed from one which was totally wrong, based on a slight mispronuciation, and which shows you shouldn't neccesarily trust the word of a 35 year old woman from the other end of the country on these things.

Some of these people have some wacky cars. There's lots and lots of RX-7s, Evos, and various Nissan sports cars roaming around Akiba at night. Well, during the day, too, but they're all that's left there at night. But anyhow, there's usually something weird done to the cars in Akiba. I'm guessing it's the guys who own the big anime shops.

Mitsubishi Evo IV with giant fucking graphics

I swear to fucking god when I look away from this image, it blinks.

I don't remember what this car is

But I'm pretty sure that image is one of Kousuke Fujishima's characters. God I'm a dork.

Another fucked up Evo IV

If you ask me, this Evo IV is better than the other one. It just has so much more cute.

Just that Evo from the front, if I grabbed the right picture.

Nissan Fairlady Z with Twinkle Star Sprites graphics

I hope this belongs to someone involved in making the game. Really now.

Section 6 - Whatever

Royce factory parking lot

This is in Ishikari, Hokkaido. It's the employee parking lot for a chocolate company that makes really good chocolate. Note the wall in the back. Cute, huh? The whole area is surrounded by farmland, BTW.

Perhaps the oldest living cat on earth as of September 2005.

This cat is 18 years old. Well, there's probably a few older, But give her another couple of years. She has a few more in her.

Section 7 - What the hell did you do to that truck?

If I recall correctly, this is a Nissan.

Or it was at one point. I have no fucking clue what that says, and I can't figure out the characters enough to look them up.

Well, it is custom.

Maybe they're taking the little truck somewhere to be customized?

Hino Chrome Machine

This is the first one I saw. I was...stunned. I may have seen these before, but I don't remember. This time, I just saw it sitting there, I could get a good look, so I remembered it.

I mean damn, look at the detail in this thing.

These are working vehicles, too. The way I understand it, trucks like this tend to be owned by independent truck drivers, who love their trucks waaaay too much.

Invincible, something something something gazing at Orion.(mitsuboshi)

Oh, that's the cute little Nissan Figaro in the foreground.

Yes, the bright colors and festoonery continue in the engine bay. Hey, that's me!

Well, that's everything. I've got some Korean car pictures, too.
